Waste Reduction Week: Practical Ideas for Your Office

Waste Reduction Week is October 16-22 this year and annually serves a reminder of the importance of reducing waste and promoting sustainability. This week-long initiative provides an opportunity for us to think about the changes we can make. In this blog post, we’ll explore how your office can make an impact by providing practical tips and ideas to participate in Waste Reduction Week.

Battery Recycling

At Commercial Properties, we have established a dedicated battery recycling program to responsibly dispose of used batteries, and you can too! Call2Recycle offers flexible options to recycle your rechargeable or single-use batteries by shipping in boxes from your office. They provide collection bins and shipping return labels, so we simply have to place them in easily accessible locations to encourage employees to participate. Employees can bring in old batteries from home, or simply just collect the ones that get used around the office. These efforts reduce the risk of hazardous battery waste.

Electronics Drive

Every year, Commercial Properties does an electronics drive. We collect and recycle retired smartphones, laptops, tablets, and much more from all our building’s tenants and take them to be recycled properly. By participating in an electronics drive, you’re not only decluttering your space but also reducing electronic waste and ensuring that these devices are recycled in an environmentally friendly way. Once collected, find out where to drop off your items using the Recycle NB Electronics Map, or the Recycle Electronics NS Map.

Use Recycled Materials

Prioritizing the use of recycled materials whenever possible is a sustainable and responsible choice. By incorporating items like recycled paper, furniture made from reclaimed wood, or office supplies made from recycled plastics, we not only reduce the demand for new resources but also minimize the environmental footprint of our workspace. Reusing materials when possible is another key factor to take into consideration. Whether it is old office furniture or dated décor, consider taking usable items to your local repo store instead of putting them in the trash. These simple choices help decrease waste and conserve energy.

Waste Reduction Week serves as an annual reminder that each of us can play a role in reducing our environmental footprint. Even small changes like turning off lights when we don’t need them, carpooling to work, or saying no to disposable plastics during lunch can add up to a big impact. By adopting sustainable practices and participating in Waste Reduction Week, we can collectively make a substantial impact on the health of our planet. Let’s make our offices a place where sustainability is the norm, our planet will thank us for it!
