SAINT JOHN—Commercial Properties, one of the region’s largest property owners and managers, announced today that it would be adding Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations to its buildings in Moncton and Saint John, beginning with the Mercantile Centre and Chesley Drive buildings in Saint John. It is also adding a new Chevy Bolt EV to its fleet of vehicles.
Commercial Properties has a strong track record in environmental responsibility. It was the first private company to build a LEED Gold certified building in Atlantic Canada and currently has eight buildings certified under the BOMA BEST program, measuring energy and water usage to reduce resource consumption. Commercial Properties has also reduced its energy consumption and carbon footprint by installing modern high efficiency HVAC heating and cooling equipment, LED lighting and sensors. It was even the first business in Saint John to use solar powered compacting trash bins.
“By adding EV charging stations to the Mercantile Centre and 400 Chesley Drive, we make it much easier for our tenants to own EV vehicles,” said Paul Moore, general manager of Commercial Properties. “These are the first two stations in an overall plan to add charging stations at our major buildings.”
“From surveys we’ve done in the buildings we manage, we know that over 80 per cent of our tenants drive themselves to work, and another 10 per cent carpool, so there is a real opportunity for energy savings and emission reductions by helping them switch to Electric Vehicles,” he added.
Commercial Properties owns properties throughout the Maritimes including a number of landmarks in Saint John such as Brunswick House, Mercantile Centre and Somerset Square, as well as restored heritage properties, Red Rose Building and the Ordnance Building. It also owns Commerce Place, a six story building on Main Street in Moncton.
